SARAH SMUTS-KENNEDY was resident at the Lock-up Cultural Centre in May 2009. Alongside her research and development for a new body of work, the artist exhibitedPyramid Schemein the John Paynter Gallery. The Gallery is located within the Centre and gives visiting artists the opportunity to develop and exhibit work in conjunction with their residency.
The Artist in Residence Program is funded by the University of Newcastle and supported by Hunter TAFE and the Hunter Writers Centre.

International or National Artists
We offer four residencies each year of up to three weeks each for international or national artists. Accommodation and stipend is negotiated with the artist & the AIR committee.
Emerging Artists
We offer six residencies each year of up to three weeks each for emerging artists. Provided is accommodation plus negotiated stipend.
Visitors
We offer short term accommodation (2 to 3 weeks) at no cost to visiting scholars or artists by arrangement with the University of Newcastle and Hunter Institute & approved cultural institutions.
Visiting Artists
We offer accommodation at reduced rates for visiting artists delivering lectures, participating in festivals or attending conferences and seminars.
Important dates
Submissions for 2010 are due by 31 August 2009. Artists are selected by the AIR board of management in early September. The 2010 Residency program begins mid-January next year.

Community
The Lock-up welcomes practitioners who engage with the community during their stay by conducting demonstrations or master classes, exhibiting work or providing lectures or talks.
Submission requirements
Please submit the downloadable application form along with a written statement no more than 4 A4 typed pages, outlining your practice to date, and your proposed project for the residency. Please send support material as JPG only.
