The Lock-Up's education program is funded by Newcastle City Council's Community Assistance Program and offers three levels of educational tours and workshops with units of work developed for the following:
The Convict Era

- The convict history of Newcastle

- Work and survival in the settlement
Teaching Methodology
Students will take part in interactive lessons and role play set in the convict times in Newcastle. The role play focuses on the relationship between the military, convicts and free settlers.

Lesson Content
- Types of crimes committed past and present
- How and why people were charged with offences
- Types of punishment from convict to present
- Role of police in the community
Teaching Methodology
Students will take part in interactive lessons and role play with a drama set in the early 19th century. An offender is charged with a crime and students play various roles in this drama including drawing up a charge sheet. They learn how the police station operated from arrest, to court, to gaol.
General Tour
The Lock-Up also offers a general tour of the centre taking in the museum, cells, gallery and archeological excavation site of the stables.
The tour also includes an education trail with worksheets.
